San Ildefonso is a humble town situated in the northern most part of Bulacan. Bounded by San Rafael, San Miguel, and Candaba City in Pampanga, this first-class municipality is just a few kilometers away from Metro Manila, making it an ideal place for investments outside the metropolis. As of 2020 Census, the estimated population in San Ildefonso is at 115, 713.
Looking back at the history of San Ildefonso, it was initially called ‘Bulak’ due to the kapok trees (locally called Bulak) growing abundantly around the area. Back then, San Ildefonso is still part of San Rafael. During the Spanish colonialization, Bulak’s name was changed to Hacienda San Juan de Dios, after claiming hectares of fertile, agricultural land. Astonished by the its natural beauty, the Spaniards once again decided to change its name to Hacienda Buenavista, meaning beautiful scenery. A name fitting for the marvelous beauty of nature bestowed upon the humble town
Eventually, its name was changed to San Ildefonso, in honor of Alfonso XII, the King of Spain and San Ildefonso, their patron saint. Some time between 1905-1906, San Ildefonso merged with San Miguel due to their inability to fund the expenditures in operating a local government. However, the town slowly stand back up on its feet and became an independent town once again.
Since it is landlocked, the main drivers of economy in San Ildefonso are manufacturing and agriculture. The city’s products include bakeries and sweet preserves, rice, high value crops, and marbles.
San Ildefonso is famous for its ‘Bahay na Pula,’ a hacienda which was confiscated by the Japanese soldiers and used as a barracks during the Japanese occupation in the Philippines.
