Malolos in Hindsight

Malolos City is a first-class urban component city in the province of Bulacan. It is bounded by Calumpit and Pulilan on the North, Paombong on the West, Guiguinto on the East, and Bulakan on the Southwestern part. The estimated population of the city is about 261, 189 according to 2020 census.

Known as the Cradle of the Philippine Republic, this humble city is known as the seat where the first Philippine Republic was inaugurated in 1899. Even though the historic Malolos Constitution was short-lived, it proved that Filipinos can stand proudly on their own and can break free from the chains of Spanish colonialization that ruled the Philippines for over 300 years.

Tracing back the origin of its name, it is believed that ‘Malolos’ is a result of misunderstanding of Spanish missionaries who first reached the place. Looking for inhabited places along the Calumpit River, they stumbled upon a riverside barrio (present-day Kanalate). They asked the natives about the name of the place. The natives, not knowing any Spanish language, replied that the flow of the rivers is going ‘paluslos’ or downwards. The missionaries pronounced it as Malolos and further corruption of the word led it to what we know now as Malolos.

The four-thousand hectare of fertile farm lands and two-thousand hectare of fishponds are the main sources of the city’s wealth and livelihood. Aside from that, the Malolos is also thriving with cottage and sewing industry.

Malolos City is the origin of the famous inipit bread and the creamy pastillas dessert. Malolos also houses the century old Barasoain Church which served as a silent witness to the historic Malolos Congress.
