Discovering Bulakan, Bulacan

Bulakan is part of the 385 towns founded by the Augustinian Friars in 1572. The term ‘Bulakan’ is derived from the Tagalog word ‘bulak’ (cotton), which during that time, grew abundantly in the area when the Spanish arrived.

It initially served as the capital of the Bulacan province, and enjoyed its fair share of trade and commerce with Manila, before the title was transferred to Malolos after the American occupation. At present time, Bulakan stands as a first-class municipality and prides itself on being one of the oldest towns in Bulacan.

Alright, not to be confused with the usage of the letters ‘c’ and ‘k’. According to Chapter 2, Section 15 of the New Provincial Administrative Code of Bulacan (Ordinance No. C-004) of 2007), the letter k or Bulakan should be used when pertaining to the municipality while the ‘c’ of Bulacan refers to the province itself.

Peak attractions of the town include the Our Lady of Assumption Church (also known as the Bulakan Church), a 19th century Neo-Byzantine-Romanesque stone church and the Marcelo H. Del Pilar Shrine located at Sitio Cupang, Brgy. San Nicolas. The place where the shrine stands today was the former site of the house of the Del Pilar clan.
