Originating from the native term ‘pana-sa-baboy,’ Panabo City is a 3rd-class component city in the province of Davao del Norte. Being part of the Davao Metropolitan Area, Panabo City is bordered by Davao City on the West and South, some municipalities of the Davao Del Norte on the North, and the Davao Gulf on the East.
Panabo City is widely known as the ‘Banana Capital of the Philippines,’ thanks to its fertile land where hectares of Cavendish bananas are planted. Coincidentally, this town also houses the largest banana plantation in the world, the Tagum Agricultural Development Corporation or TADECO. This company owns 6,900 hectares of banana plantation and is the one responsible for exporting millions of bananas annually.
Putting bananas aside, Panabo City also has a rich history. Initially, the fertile lands of Panabo City were inhabited by the native group of Aetas. They lived a simple nomadic lifestyle and hunted forest animals for food using their most essential tool-bow and arrow. When the 20th century came, Christians started inhabiting the area. During the time, Panabo City was already the trading center within the area. The arrival of Christians prompted the Aetas to move to the hinterlands, but not before leaving a legacy that will soon turn to be the name of the progressive town. Hence, Panabo City was born and became popularly known.
As of the 2020 census, the estimated population in the City of Panabo is approximately 209, 230 people.
